Fundraising for Radio Farabundo Martí: Supporting a Vital Channel Preserving History and Serving Thousands

In March 2023, the Salvadoran Canadian Association (ASALCA) launched a fundraising campaign to support a community radio station that amplifies the voices of peasant communities in Chalatenango, a remote region of El Salvador. The station plays a vital role in covering and reporting on local events, including massacres and annual commemorations.

In 2022, the station’s antenna was struck by lightning, causing severe equipment damage and forcing it off the air for seven months. A funding request of approximately $5,000 USD was submitted to replace essential equipment such as batteries, converters, and AC units needed to resume broadcasting.

By April 2023, ASALCA had successfully raised $5,268 USD, which was presented to the Radio Board of Directors with a symbolic cheque on May 12th. The funds, collected from Canadian donors, were channeled through FutureWatch.

Most recently, in August 2025, ASALCA made an additional donation to support the logistics of relocating the radio station to a new site within the town of Arcatao. The radio’s board continues to work collaboratively with community members to strengthen long-term sustainability efforts, ensuring the station remains a lasting and powerful voice for the region.
